There are several ways to charge the 12 volt batteries, but an alternator conversion to take the place of the stock 6 volt generator is probably the best. If you want to do it right you can replace the precombustion chambers with ones that are drilled for glow plugs.

I have also used a long battery like a JD 4020 uses along the side of the engine inside the frame rail. It is possible to have both pony and direct electric start if you wanted, but the space where the pony sits is a convenient spot to mount a battery box. With the correct nose housing and lever housing, the starter can be indexed to fit nicely inside the frame. Getting the correct helical cut drive (there are left and right versions ) is most important.

The 40,42 and 50 MT Delco starters all use the same nose housing and starter drives. The original style 24V starter had an inertia drive bendix like an older Ford starter from the 60's and 70's. If your tractor is that late of a U series, it should already have the starter hole machined. I ended up also doing our D4 orchard tractors after that when I was rebuilding them but I had to take the bell housing to a local shop that machined back to the cat drawings. I think I had to grind the edge of the side of the nose cone with an angle grinder for clearance if I remember correctly.

I was looking for the special starter from another u series and the local starter shop said he could get me the helix cut starter drive and the offset nose cone to fit a 40mt truck starter. We had the wet clutch with the 3 hole plate right under the pony starter clutch. It uses the other side of the ring gear and our s had a helical tooth rather then a straight cut gear. We got the entire kit from a company in Texas that really knew the process and every thing worked out great. Our cat had the hole pattern mold in the housing and we had to drill and tap them. It starts a lot better and we do not have starting motor issues. We removed the starting motor and installed a 24volt electric Starter. We had the starter pinion fail on our D-8H starting motor last year. One advantage of direct start is the starter pinion will engage on the front side of the ring gear which should be like new. I was going to convert a d-6 this summer but I ended up fixing the original setup partly because this one didn't have the factory hole and I was leery of locating and drilling a new hole. It will be a three bolt cover with the pattern a starter uses. It is straight forward if you have the factory hole below the pony motor clutch/pinion arrangement. Alot of the things I see is they pretty much bolt up just wondering what kind of truth is behind it before I shell out the cash.
